    Favelas in Rio de Janeiro

I gonna talk about slums in Rio de Janeiro, known as « favelas ». There are many favelas in Rio de Janeiro, it gathers the third of the urban population. There are many difficulties in the favelas:
lack of infrastructure (sewers, for example), m
isery,  Violence: drug gangs wage war in the streets (in 2007, 1260 people were killed by police in Rio), Illegal traffic of drugs, weapons, etc. ...

Some hotels offer a guided tour of the Rocinha slum, which was visited in his time by Pope John Paul II. However, it is important to remember that a majority of Cariocas living in the favelas are "ordinary" people who have no collusion with the mafia. Many of them have a job as a maid, bus driver, taxi driver for tourist transport ... and even the police, so do not forget that these are poor people, and not just the mafia. It is also important to remember that it is not advisable to walk in these areas without being in good company. However, I know some friends who live in a favela named "Vidigal" in the south of Rio and it is not really dangerous. Today, the favelas in the South have been "cleaned" by the police, there aren’t so many dangers. In recent years, tour operators organize tours of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

However, since Brazil was offered the organization of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Summer Games in 2016 for the city of Rio, the Brazilian government decided to use means military to oust drug dealers with some success, particularly as Vila Cruzeiro in Rio in November 2010.

Rocinha is the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, it includes between 150 000 and 500 000 inhabitants, the exact number is not known, no census has never been conducted. It is located between the affluent neighborhoods of São Conrado and Gávea. The average income of less than 690 reais per months (around 260 euros). As often happens in these neighborhoods, Rocinha was prey to conflicts between drug gangs (Amigos Dos Amigos or Comando Vermelho) in order to take control of the favela. However, following a major police and military operation occurred on 13 November 2011, the favela was pacified and traffickers were expelled. It has since been installed UPP (police unit Peacekeeper), designed to prevent the return of the traffickers or the installation of a militia. It also marks the return of most state and public services in one place before completely abandoned by the government.

Tio Lino has the soul of a lifesaver. Having watched over bathers in Copacabana, the former lifeguard now cares of the young people from Rocinha. In this "city within a city" plagued by cocaine trafficking, the association "Mundo da arte" encourages teens to dream of a different future, through the practice of sculpture, theater, capoeira ... In 2012, "Mundo da arte" gives a chance to 150 young people. All week, the Tio Lino hosts them after school, provided that they turn away from traffics.
